How to Go Bold with your Decor

Blue Patterned Tablescape | Summer Table Setting
photo via

Now that I've showed you how neutral walls can work in your home, it's time to talk about how you can go BOLD with your fabrics, furniture and accessories!

Unsure how you can mix things up by using color in your home without going overboard? Let's take a look at the color wheel to get a better understanding!

Color Wheel

If you're new to mixing prints and patterns I suggest sticking to one color family. It's an easy way to ensure your decor is cohesive and bold without going overboard. Red is a bold color and many people find it hard to commit to such a strong color, but this red and neutral kitchen shows you how great it can look if you take a chance! I just love how Sarah Richards mixed polka dots and floral fabrics along with many other shades of red.

If it's a small area in your home that you're looking to redecorate I suggest sticking to one pattern and one color to make the most impact without looking cluttered. The use of a bold geometric pattern in a rich navy color makes the small cozy hallway nook have a big impact!

This room has just a hint of color! If you're looking to step outside your comfort zone when it comes to adding color to your home decor and want to add more than one hue I suggest going with complementary colors (colors that are opposite each other the color wheel!) It is a great way to add a subtle hint of color into an otherwise neutral room, especially when it's added in small doses like this. Get more tips on adding complementary colors to your home here.

Still interested in mixing two colors, but looking for more of a impact than the above? This living room shows you how you can take the same two complementary colors and go even bolder! Little things like a piece of colorful artwork, couch pillows and fresh blooms really make a difference when changing up your decor.

There's nothing more bold than to paint your ceiling a color. It's extremely untraditional, but it's so visually appealing you'll wonder why more people aren't doing it. The bold blue ceiling and rich wood stairs in the photo perfectly compliment the photos of the gallery wall.

And then you can just take a leap of faith and opt to add multiple colors and patterns to your room instead! Somehow the neutral walls, gray couch and amazing natural lighting in this living room provide the perfect canvas for a healthy dose of color and pattern and artwork that make me rethink my more neutral decor taste.

So are you brave enough to go BOLD? I hope I've shown you that it's easier than it seems! Whether it's one item or a whole room it's time to hold your breathe and take the plunge into the world of bold decor!

The Floral Jumpsuit

Design Lab Lord & Taylor Blue Floral Print Culotte Romper | Summer Outfit Inspiration | Greenwich Conneticut Harbor Photography | Living After Midnite by Jackie GIardina | Style Blogger

If you've been a reader of my blog for a while you know that I jumped on the jumpsuit bandwagon last year and haven't looked back since. While I haven't found the perfect Winter jumpsuit yet (I'm still on the hunt for a wide leg, long sleeve one), I have added the most awesome warm weather jumpsuits to my wardrobe (check out more jumpsuit looks here, here & here)!! I'm a dress girl through and through so initially trying one on was intimidating but I'm so glad I gave it a try!! This bold floral print halter top jumpsuit definitely pulled me out of my comfort zone, but in the best way possible!! Lesson of the day - try everything once! How do you know if you like (or in this case love) something until you give it a try!

My shopping habit has gotten a little bit out of control as of late and I since buying this jumpsuit about a month ago I found yet another one to add to my closet!! Finally a long, wide leg one with an open back and it's all mine!! Shop it here before it hits the blog (PS it's under $35!)

Easy Purple, Blue & Silver Striped Manicure

Purple, Silver and Blue Striped Manicure | Easy Nail Art Tutorial on Living After Midnite by Jackie Giardina | Beauty Blogger

True life I was rocking polish free nails for about 2 weeks before I finally got a chance to actually sit down and paint my nails and it was so weird! I seriously feel naked without polish on and it's actually come to the point where I feel weird sporting your run of the mill one color polish manicure. But life has been crazy and I just haven't had the time to do elaborate designs so instead I created this super easy purple, blue and silver manicure so could stop cringing every time I looked down at my bare nails!! It took me less than 30 minutes to do this nail art design and I didn't use anything other than the 3 polishes which means you can absolutely recreate it on yourself no matter what your skill level is!!

Just paint your nails one color, then paint one stripe down the middle of each nail in another color (it doesn't have to be perfect), then taking a polish with a thin brush (most nail art polishes have a thin striping brush) and paint a stripe along one side (or both sides) of the middle stripe! SUPER easy!! If you try this at home and it doesn't come out as great as you would've liked then I suggest throwing on a coat of glitter polish over the top...glitter distracts from any imperfections and makes everything better!

Random tidbit...when I was typing this post up I typed this purple polish's name as "Swearing in the Subway" which let's face it is just as appropriate as "Sweating in the Subway!"

PS this post wouldn't have been possibly with Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs...no really...my legs are covered in bruises from dancing and that stuff is pure magic. I received a few bottles of it last year and after a few very unsuccessful tries at using it I basically stashed it in the back of my beauty drawer and forgot I had it. Fast forward to this year and after a couple attempts I am now a HUGE fan! My suggestions for applying it (since as I mentioned I had a disaster or two before figuring out the best way) are #1 stand in your bathtub while applying it (trust me), #2 make sure you don't have any lotion on your legs and #3 don't apply it directly to your legs, instead spray it in your hands and apply it in circular motions until it's evenly applied and rubbed in. Voila Airbrushed Legs!

I haven't quite finished swapping my Summer and Winter clothes yet because other than a few fluke nice days the weather's been pretty shitty in New York so far this Spring. While brainstorming for this post I was debating between two dresses, neither of which I like very much, and then I remembered about this off the shoulder dress I picked up last year that I luckily didn't pack away at the end of last Summer. Sadly it's no longer available, but I rounded up my favorite striped pieces that I might just need to pick up this season!

Cherry Blossoms & Gold Collars

Spring Cherry Blossom Outfit | Black Off Shoulder Top | Blue French Connection Cross Body Bag | Skinny Jeans | Pink Lace Up Sandals | Living After Midnite by Jackie Giardina

This gold collar/purple lipstick combination has been on heavy rotation over the past few weeks. You've already seen it on Instagram twice, but since I've been slacking taking and editing photos it's taken me a little while to get these up on the blog. Cherry blossom season might be ending, but I'm so glad I got a chance to take these while the trees were still in full bloom.

I've been raving about this lipstick and collar for a while, now let's talk about this bag! I picked it up at Macy's Backstage, a new division of the Macy's department store, for an insanely low price! There aren't many Macy's Backstage locations right now, but they're expanding rapidly and if you're lucky enough to have one close to you like I am I highly suggest stopping by. If you happen to find something as great as I did post a photo of it on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtags #MacysBackstage and #Sweepstakes to be entered to win a $100 gift card.

I've had these pink lace up sandals for a few years and if they were still available I would probably have them in every color available, but lucky for me (and you) lace up are pretty much the hottest shoe of the summer and they're are tons of styles available! I've rounded up a couple of my favorite below, but leave me a comment if you find a pair I might've left out. I'm on the hunt for the perfect black ones.
