Room for Style: Pattern Mixing for your Home

Don't back away from bold, multi patterned decorating!
Very often we mix bold patterns and color in our wardrobe and find it overwhelming to do the same in our home when selecting window treatments, furniture, rugs, etc. Before you back down from taking that leap get inspiration and guidance from fashion.

I love mixing patterns, I think it adds, energy and dimension to an other wise boring room.

Start with one room, maybe the dining room...you have your table and chairs and any other case goods. Use a large pattern on your rug, cover the seats with a solid or textured fabrics then add a pattern or striped fabric on your window treatments. That's a safe start!

Now lets venture into the living room. Here you have a lot of fabrics to work with. The largest item is going to be your sofa, so lets select a solid or textured fabric, but for your chair(s) lets use a stripe! Then anchor the room with an area rug using a larger pattern. Draw the eye to the window treatment by using a medium scale pattern and then finish the room using solid and patterned throw pillows. That wasn't so hard was it?

Try doing this in your bedroom, you will find it a little easier by starting with a "bed in a bag" they usually put together a mix of patterns that all work together, then all you need to do is add a window treatment and an area rug and you're all set!
