You must pay attention to the light in a room. Lamp style is important, but so is the quantity. The way you light a room will completely change a space and having multiple lighting sources allows you to control ambiance, mood and how you use the room.
Using dimmers can also make an incredible difference. I once read an article that said "dimmers are a gift from the decorating fairy" and I would have to agree!
Lighting should be layered. Use a mix of floor and table lighting, even if there is a ceiling fixture!
Get the scale right!
