An area rug defines a space. When selecting a rug you need to consider the floor plan, what furniture you want on and around it and the balance of the two.
Before shopping for a rug look at your space. Measure or tape off the area to give yourself an idea of the best size for the room. You should go large enough so the front legs of you furniture are on the rug if not all legs, when in doubt go larger. Under a table and chairs make sure the rug is large enough so the chairs are still on the rug when pulling out from the table.
